That rainstorm was due to the monster Class 3 Hurricane Erin which was created weeks prior by Acension Island then steered up to NYC and made to sit-still for the entire day before being sent out to the northwest. All 3 area airports reported distant thunder as ERIN say only 200 miles east of NYC. It provided the atmospheric high-voltage gradient necessary to accomplish the HUTCHISON EFFECT which is what dissolved the towers into dust whilst in mid-air.

If this is your first time hearting of any of this, you are literally many decads behind, because the tech used was announced by Pres Reagan in 1983 and had in fact been under development since at least the 1940s and likely earlier. Oddly, Hurricane Erin (2001) is kept absent from (spook-controlled) wikipedia except as a footnote in the 2001 Hurricane Season entry! In reality, the Navy was flying monitoring planes into its eye; this was a Very Important and uncommonly well-studied tool of weather warfare.
